The air thins, the colours change from green to ochre to red, and the first date palms and oases appear at the roadside. There may be Berber nomads on the passes, and Barbary macaques in the cedar forests at altitude. The destination is Merzouga — a desert town on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, Morocco's largest section of Saharan sand, close to the Algerian border and the most easterly point of the tour.

A day in the Sahara, entirely on your terms. The bikes rest and the desert takes over. Passing through Ouarzazate, evidence of the Atlas Film Studios appears at the roadside: Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, the first Star Wars, and The Mummy were all filmed in this landscape.
